What is Battery Sulfation?
Sulfation is the most common cause of lead-acid battery death — and the one most people cause by accident. It is the hardening of lead sulfate crystals on the plates, and it is the direct result of leaving a battery undercharged.
How sulfation happens
- Discharge — the chemical reaction turns plate material and sulfuric acid into lead sulfate.
- Prompt recharge — fresh, fine lead sulfate converts back. This is normal, reversible cycling.
- Left undercharged — if the battery sits below full, the fine crystals grow into coarse, hard ones that no longer convert back.
The trigger is not age — it is time spent below full charge. A battery stored discharged for weeks sulfates even if it is never used.
What sulfation does
- Raises internal resistance — the hard sulfate is a poor conductor.
- Lowers capacity — less active material is available to react.
- Lowers CCA — higher resistance means less cranking current, which is why a sulfated battery reads weak on a conductance tester and turns the engine slowly.
Prevention and reversal

Why storage and heat make it worse
Sulfation runs on two multipliers: time spent discharged and temperature. Heat roughly doubles the chemical reaction rate every 10°C — a battery stored discharged in a hot garage sulfates several times faster than one on a cool shelf. The Author's Take
My position: Sulfation is the battery disease that is almost always a storage and charging habit, not a manufacturing defect — and it is cheap to prevent and usually too late to cure.
Supporting logic: The same battery that dies "suddenly" in winter was usually sulfated quietly over months of sitting below full. The cheapest maintenance is simply keeping it charged, which is what the float stage exists to do.
