Batteries in Series vs Parallel: Voltage and Capacity Wiring
Two wiring patterns answer almost every multi-battery question, and they do opposite things: one raises the voltage, the other raises the capacity.
The two rules

Series serves higher-voltage systems (24V trucks, 48V banks); parallel serves longer runtime at the same voltage. Combined series-parallel banks serve both at once — the building block of every large installation.
The matching rule
A bank is only as good as its weakest battery, so batteries in a bank should be matched — same chemistry, type, capacity and age. In series, an old battery's higher resistance forces it to overcharge while the others lag; in parallel, a weak battery drags the healthy ones down. Mixing old and new is the most common bank-killing mistake.
Worked example: a 2S2P pack
Four 3.2V 100 Ah LFP cells in a 2S2P arrangement (two series pairs in parallel) produce 6.4V and 200 Ah: series doubles the voltage, parallel doubles the capacity. The same four cells in 4S give 12.8V and 100 Ah — the same total energy, a different system, and the 12.8V pack is the one a 12V installation actually uses.
What imbalance does to a pack
Series packs charge and discharge through every cell, so the pack follows its weakest cell — one lagging cell caps the whole string (see cell balancing). The matching rule exists for exactly this reason: mixed ages, capacities or chemistries build the imbalance in at assembly.
