Battery Water Level: Topping Up a Flooded Battery
Charging slowly consumes water, not acid — and the only correct replacement is distilled water. The maintenance is small, and the two classic mistakes (acid instead of water, tap instead of distilled) are how batteries are quietly ruined.

Why only distilled
The water lost during charging evaporates as water — the acid stays behind. The top-up is therefore pure water, and distilled is the requirement because the calcium, iron and chlorine in tap water accumulate with every top-up and accelerate corrosion and self-discharge (see corrosion for the vapour side of the same chemistry).
How often, and how much
Check every 1–3 months in normal service, more often in heat or heavy cycling. The level to keep: covering the plates — typically 5–10 mm above them — without filling to the cap; an overfilled battery spills acid as it gasses on charge, eating terminals and paint (see terminal corrosion).

My position: Battery watering is the smallest maintenance task with the biggest mistake-to-task ratio — the whole skill is distilled water, no acid, plates covered — and the batteries that die young are usually the ones whose caps were never lifted.
The reasoning: The failure mode is silent: low electrolyte exposes the plates to sulfation, and the wrong water poisons them slowly. Ten minutes a season with the right water is the entire maintenance — and its absence is the most common cause of avoidable flooded-battery death.

Do I need to add water to my car battery?
Only flooded batteries with removable vent caps — and only distilled water, never acid and never tap water. AGM, EFB and gel batteries are sealed and must never be opened. Add when the level falls below the plates, covering them without overfilling.
